NewsFleX offline Usenet news reader on the Asus EeePC 701: Open an xterm with ctrl alt T. Download the xforms library: wget ftp://panteltje.com/pub/eeepc/libforms.so.1 and move it to /usr/lib/ : sudo mv libforms.so.1 /usr/lib/ Download NewsFleX Usenet news reader: wget ftp://panteltje.com/pub/eeepc/NewsFleX and move it to /usr/local/bin/ : sudo mv NewsFleX /usr/local/bin/ Download the NewsFleX setup files to your home directory ( /home/user/ ): wget ftp://panteltje.com/pub/eeepc/newsflexuser.tgz Now unpack the setup files: tar -zxvf newsflexuser.tgz This will create a directory .NewsFleX with subdirectories. Start NewsFleX by typing: NewsFleX Answer 'no' to questions about moving databases Of course you can also make an icon in the Internet tab, how to add an application there is described elsewhere. How to configure NewsFleX: 1 Selecting a news server: Select WINDOW -> NEWSSERVER LIST type news.aioe.org press ADD press 'Yes' to create entry. Double click entry news.aioe.org press 'CLOSE' Now you are in the setup form. 2 Setup, specifying your name, email, and mail server: Enter your user name, and user email Enter any mail server name if you have one (needed for email only). Leave all other fields as they are, now press ACCEPT. 3 downloading the list of newsgroups: Select ONLINE -> REFRESH GROUP LIST. Wait until NewsFleX is finished with downloading the active list (the list of newsgroups), 4 subscribing to a newsgroup: Select GROUPS -> SHOW ALL GROUPS The list of newsgroups should now display in red. Single click one you want to participate in, for now use alt.test. Select GROUPS -> SUBSCRIBE Select GROUPS -> SHOW ONLY SUBSCRIBED GROUPS 5 getting new article headers: Now you should see alt.test in black. Select ONLINE -> GET NEW HEADERS IN SELECTED GROUPS NewsFleX will download the new articles (the last 100 of them). 6 Selecting a downloaded article Select GROUPS Double click on alt.test Now you should see the new articles (subject) in red. Double click on the articles you are interested in. 7 Getting marked article bodies: Select ONLINE -> GET MARKED ARTICLE BODIES NewsFleX will get the marked articles, and switch back to the group list. Press NEXT UNREAD. Now you should be able to read the article. If you do not want to reply to an article, press NEXT UNREAD again. 8 Replying to an article: If you want to reply to an article (posting), select POSTINGS -> FOLLOW UP ARTICLE Scroll down and enter your text at the bottom. Press SEND LATER You are now in the posting list, you can go there anytime by selecting WINDOW -> POSTING LIST When done, select GROUPS -> DELETE ALL NOT LOCKED ARTICLES IN SELECTED GROUPS. Select WINDOW -> POSTING LIST Select your posting by single click. Select ONLINE -> POST SELECTED POSTINGS. NewsFleX will send the posting. Get what you just posted: Press GROUP LIST Select alt.test with single click Select ONLINE -> GET NEW HEADERS IN SELECTED GROUPS. Double click on alt.test Scroll down, your reply article with your name should be there. Double click on it. Select ONLINE -> GET MARKED ARTICLE BODIES. Press NEXT UNREAD You should see your reply now. 9 Locking articles. To keep articles, select them with single click and then select ARTICLES -> LOCK ARTICLE. 10 Posting a new article. To post a *new* article (start a topic), select GROUPS LIST. Double click on alt.test Now you are in the article list. Select POSTINGS -> NEW ARTICLE Type 'Test 1234' in the subject field (without the quotes). Type some text in the text area. Press SEND LATER. You will be returned to the posting list. Single click on the posting you just wrote. Select ONLINE -> POST SELECTED POSTINGS You can also double click on an entry in the posting list to get back to your text, and then press SEND NOW to send it. Note: News.aioe.org is an open server, please do not abuse it. It does not have binary groups. NewsFleX is not really intended for binaries.
